What a good idea. It might cause the Malaysian Govt. to pose some
awkward questions, firstly to the British High Commissioner, and then,
perhaps to the Foreign and Commonwealth from MHC. It could be the
push we need to send 'em running for cover!

Any volunteers then? Instead of the usual crew someone with a new pen might stoke some interest, we have the 50th Anniversary of Merdeka in just about 5 months, we must let our friends in Malaysia know what is going on.

That is a belter, thank you so much, we know you guys do a lot of work behind the scenes, which is much appreciated, lobbying, writing, telephoning, spreading the word etc and I'm just glad that we share the same side!

I cannot think that the suits will ever 'about turn', I was always optimistic about the outcome, as you have to live in hope, but being realistic we now know they have stood their ground. that is their prerogative, they have (apparently) got it wrong.

We will soldier on ...........

I was going to do it but was 'bogged' down with some IA's (remember those?) on the Bren Gun situation. I had tried to turn up the 'air' by sticking a round in the thingymebob and turning it to a larger hole but that didn't seem to work. So I've just reloaded the magazine, changed barrels, and taken the end result to the post office whence it will be fired off.

With regard to the Bren you are talking about stoppages. Knew them all once but I was only a NS soldier. Must have learnt them in a previous life. Did the bren really survive into the 60s? The FN rifle came through to front line troops in the 56-57 era in Malaya. I was shown how to use one by an SAS trooper but was never trusted with anything better than a 303 jungle carbine, and better still, a Greener pump action shotgun, I think. I certainly remember being sent out to play once with a shotgun, and on my belt a bayonet for a jungle carbine. The bayonet was very useful.

The Malay Straits should do the trick in the far east. It was also very good for scrunching up and stuffing into wet and smelly jungle boots in the days when journalism had a real purpose. No offence to to anyone, then or now. MB.

Yes I was. It certainly survived into the 60's to be replaced by the GPMG. When I first joined the Paras in the early 60's I was a No. 1 on the Bren and had the privilege of carrying it around assault courses and during airborne exercises. On jumps, I carried my Bren between my teeth, leaving space in my container for essential equipment for the 'cross country' that inevitably followed a successful descent ... a couple of cases of Claret, corkscrew, picnic table and chairs, change of clothes to include a DJ 'just in case', and so on. Happy days. I 'remember' them well ... !

The bren gun was alive and well in the RN 63/64. I manned the bren gun on patrols to Kuching and in the Malacca straits. It was used to cover short range situations such as boat searches and sniper fire from the river bank. As a marksman I had a fondness for the bren as a very accurate weapon in its day.
