The State of Utah (USA) recently outlawed the use of speed cameras as 'unconstitutional' but before anyone slams me for agreeing with that statement, let me as a retired police officer qualify that .

The evidence in Utah suggests that more accidents are being caused by motorists who see those cameras at the last moment and brake suddenly than on ordinary stretches of highway. It was also said that drivers going slow at the camera site only to speed up once through caused people on a time schedule to drive recklessly therefore causing unecessary danger to other road users. The saftey implications aside, they are concerned that they are a means of taxation as opposed to a road safety aid and that alone makes them 'unconstitutional'.

My view apart from agreeing with all of the above is that there is no substitute for the traffic policeman who can see the standard of driving on the road and take personal action to remedy it, cameras do have their place but on junctions to photograph those who decide to go through red lights. My heart goes out to everyone who has lost someone on the roads as in most cases their deaths are totally unecessary being in the main the fault of stupidty or bad driving. I was told once many years ago that there is no such thing as an accident, someone or something has to have caused it and therefore be to blame.
