After you receive an honour from the Queen, along with your warrant you recieve a booklet entitled 'A Guide to the Wearing of Orders, Decorations, Miniatures and Medals with Dress other than Uniform'
I have attached (I hope) a couple of pages from that booklet. Just out of interest note the paragraph on 'The Wearing of Medals by the Next of Kin' and also the one that talks about the 'Right Side'

I have it in writing that I am not a CROWN SERVANT and ceased to be one when leaving the RAF and that has come from a Warrant Officer at The MoD in Whitehall a few months ago, that is his opinion on an official letter.

Further I have permission from HM The Queen to wear the PJM, a foreign decoration promulgated by Her hand in May 1968, it is just that the HDC/FCO have boxed themselves into such a corner that they now cannot get out of it, to them they must not lose face, well we all know they have done so.

As for the NoK medals well I wore my fathers yesterday and I wore my own, plus there were others who wore theirs.

John, It's not an order it comes in a booklet as explained and I suppose it dates to when Orders of Chivalry were first instigated back in the mists of time.
For instance, THe Order of the British Empire i.e KGC, KC, CBE, OBE, MBE and BEM dates back to 1917 and the reign of George V.
