While the last post buglers always sound Last Post (I think) it may be possible, as part of a pre-arranged Extended Ceremony, to sound Reveille. Certainly it is possible to take part in the ceremony with your bugle ... a ceremony that hae been held on 27212 days to date.

There are also possibilities at a Last Post ceremony that is held at the Royal Berks Cemetery and Memorial to the Missing at Plugstreet (Ploegsteert) - lovely people across the road at the bar. I think Thiepval and the other Memorials to the Missing such as Loos (a stunning vista across the 1915 battle field from the top of the wall) and Arras are also evocative places at which to sound Last Post.

Perhaps next Spring?

Barry

A complete list of Bugle Calls of the British Army played by the RGBW Regt. mounted and dismounted can be found at this site http://www.farmersboys.com/MAIN/Bugles_Calls.htm but for all the donkey wallopers out there who want a real treat, if you go to www.rblcalne.org.uk you will find the (really musical) Cavalry last post and reveille played on that wonderful instrument, the Cavalry Trumpet (oh joy).

Post Bugler from Balaclava
Stan, what a brilliant piece of research into the bugler at Balaclava. Your comments regarding the appalling treatment of military veterans are by no means out of the ordinary.

The Vagarancy Act of 1824, was introduced to lock up the plethora of Napoleonic War veterans, who had fallen on hard times and were wandering the streets, begging for money and food.

How sad then, that a government has to bring in legislation, to hide behind it's own foul ups. With regard to the veterans, many charities sprang up to assist them. This abrogation of responsibility goes back even further.

The veterans of the Battles of Crecy, Agincourt and Poitiers, suffered the same fate.

I wonder if it will be in our lifetime that a government of this country will finally honour it's obligations to it's former service personnel. I sincerely doubt it, because we all know differently... don't we.

Yours Aye

Arthur
