Post Off my chest
I just had to compose this little bit of doggerel.
The ageing soldier stood erect
By the village war memorial.
Remembering those who never returned,
And he thanked God for his own survival.

Proudly shone the medals
That hung upon his breast.
Won in battle many years ago,
And now he'd earned his rest.

But there was yet one more foe to meet.
A hidden, secret team
Of bumptious Civil Servants
Whose tactics were cowardly and mean.

Old man, why do you wear those?
I'm sure that you are wrong
To wear so many medals
And include a foreign gong.

Shame upon you, sad old man
That you want to demonstrate
Your service in far off, hostile lands
To support a fledgling State.

Remove that foreign medal
From its place of honour there.
We have not sanctioned it, formally,
For any sort of wear.

You contravene the sacred rules
Made up by our Committee.
And we have ways to punish you-
Just you wait and see.

But this old soldier never knew
How to lose a fight.
So he took on the bureaucracy
With every ounce of might.

To all who live in freedom
Because his comrades gave their all,
Just remember that they responded
To war's strident bugle call.

By the village war memorial
The ageing soldier stood, head bowed.
Still proudly wearing the foreign medal
Remembering the debt that's owed.

Gerald,

Great one! I enjoyed reading that. It gets the PJM message across in a way I haven't seen before.

Can I put your ode on the web site with your name attributed to it?

Post Another new ruling?
Just had to vent my spleen - I promise to clean up afterwards;

A couple of weeks ago I raised the image of the Medal Award Department - Bureaucratic And Silly Tricks And Ridiculous Decision Snoops (MAD - BASTARDS for short), hauling off from Armistice Day parades, all those seen to be wearing a PJM. Of course, they will have to carry out a nationality check first as Oz and Kiwi vets will be exempt from the ruling. It has yet to be confirmed but I understand that anyone who was a Boy Scout between 30th and 31st February 1956, will be allowed to wear his woggle in a prominent position to take precedence over all service medals, but only if the wearer can prove that he was born on a surfboard halfway up Ben Nevis.

I feel better for that

Post UK Veterans.
Gerald, I suspect you mock the terminally useless but you should give them some credence as they are going to tell the difference between diggers, Kiwi's and UK veterans who are seen wearing the PJM on 'formal' occasions and will immediately be able to allow the diggers and Kiwi's to proceed unchallenged so as to prevent embarrassment or civil lawsuit, whilst challenging the UK veterans for wearing a foreign medal without permission. The answer is we should all wear a drovers hat with corks suspended all round when wearing our PJM thus fooling the idiots, sorry, crasse idiots.
