Post ANZAC Day, Sandakan 2010

From the ANZAC Day service at the Sandakan Memorial Park to the death march victims, courtesy Laurie Nelms.

Of course the service is about all who served and all who died in Borneo, more so perhaps than the happenings at Gallipoli in 1915 and the brotherhood of arms there but that too is remembered alike and as the inspiration (there is a Sandakan Day remembrance, 15 August 2010 this year and I think the same date each year, specifically for the death march observances). In addition to the NOK of the WW2 Borneo veterans and the Malaysian representatives attending the ANZAC Day observances there is an increasing number of Confrontation veterans attending each year, wearing their PJMs to be sure. A dedicated few attend both.

The name Sandaken brings back memories we were stationed there on our 2nd tour of Borneo (1SG) as I recall along side the river and supplied by boat mainly some 45 years ago now.

Luxury was a shower from an empty oil drum filled by the monsoon rain.
