Human Rights - Annual Report 2007.

The Foreign and Commonwealth office website under their Human Rights Section has published the Annual Report 2007. This annual report has a section as follow:-

It has become increasingly clear in these reports that human rights can only be fully realised in a democratic society. Democratic accountability is the only way to promote the equal worth and dignity of every human being which is the ultimate purpose of human rights. But while democracy has made unprecedented advances, we need to improve our support for it both nationally and internationally.

Seems like fine words such as democracy, equal worth and dignity, flow easily through the corridors of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office so why do those presently in charge, especially the Permanent under Secretary of State, Meg Munn MP in practice deprive British veterans of the Malaya/Borneo campaigns the right to wear the PJM and in doing so treat them unequally in the Commonwealth, refuse to show them some dignity in their senior years, and deny them their democratic rights not to be ruled by unelected committees which instruct them that permission has not been given for them to wear their medal and to do so would be a gross discourtesy to HM the Queen.

I would ask Meg Munn MP ‘what happened to democratic accountability in the case of the PJM?’ Time to wake up and smell the coffee.

For those of you who are members of the RBL you will note that in the magazine for this quarter there is an article of an interview with Twigg the veterans minister. In it he is asked 'why can't veterans wear the PJM' his reply,

"I get a lot of letters about this medal, but it's a Foreign Office matter. I do understand the concerns and I am symphatic. I have done what I can and made sure that the veterans views have been heard in government".

As far as I am concerned this puts the onus completely at the door of Jack Straw and Gordon Brown!

Regards

John
