This email just received. Looks like HMG is in real turmoil. It's a shame to see Mr Touhig go because following his phone call to me a couple of weeks ago, I felt that he was at last on our side.

Dear Mr Law,

Thank you for your email. As you may be aware, I am no longer the
Veterans Minister. However, I will make sure that my successor is made
aware of the fact that I planned to write to the Honours Committee
making the case for the wearing of the award.

Yours sincerely,

Don Touhig

I've just sent this reply to Mr Touhig. I felt that he deserved some consideration after taking the trouble to phone me to state his position, and to listen to ours.

Dear Mr Touhig
I was sorry to hear that you were no longer Veteran's Minister. Although we did not initially see eye to eye, you had the decency to hear me out. The fact that you phoned me up to discuss the matter of the PJM personally does you great credit. You strike me as being as man of principles and integrity - we need more of your kind in government.
You will obviously need some time to consider your future plans, and having been made redundant several times during the 70's, I can well appreciate how you feel now. Could I be so bold as to ask, however, that now you are free from the shackles of Ministerial responsibility, we could count you formally (there's that word again) as a supporter of our cause? Perhaps from the backbench you could champion our campaign, perhaps in the nature of an Early Day Motion, which will help to air the justice of our argument?
I hope that things work out for you and that you soon recover from the disappointment of your unexpected removal from office.

Thanks for writing to Mr Touhig, Gerry.

My MP said on Thursday that Mr Touhig was a decent man.

Clearly he understood our problem - and th injustice of it all.

Which email address did he use, Gerry? I'd like to drop him a line. I think we all should.

Barry

This move is most unexpected and I certainly agree that he seemed to be coming round to our way of thinking. He was the first to say that the HD Committee recommended to HM the Queen who authorised that the PJM can be accepted but not worn. In a number of letters I made this point showing that Touhig had placed this information into the public domain so it can no longer be classed as Confidential and should be cleared under the Freedom of Information Act which the FCO have promised to tell me about quote will aim to respond within 20 working days unqote wef 21st. April, 2006.
Have we really got to them and upset them that much that there is inhouse fighting, or is it just a throwback from Blurr's Night of the Long Knives.
I hope our campaign has not done him any personal damage in his career but if it has then it is not our fault. Now let me get a letter off to Coney, he also gives the same info about The Queen being responsible for withholding the right to wear the PJM.

I have just sent this snail mail to Mr Touhig. He took time to hear us out and does not deserve to be treated in the way that he has been.

Dear Mr Touhig

I was sincerely sorry to learn that you had been deprived of your position as Veteran’s Minister in the recent reshuffle. The Campaign to win the right to formally wear the PJM is non-political but I have to say that I am at a loss to see any logic in some of the Prime Minister’s decisions recently. In particular, his actions concerning yourself and your colleague, Mr Straw, are difficult to justify.

I have never espoused the Socialist cause but after 18 years of Conservative domination, I will admit to a feeling of relief when Mr Blair gained victory in the General Election of 1997. Since then, however, we have seen the steady decline into paranoia and corruption that were previously the domain of the Conservative administration. I have now lost any vestige of faith in the party political system that prevails in this country.

You are a rarity. You read what we had to say. You spoke to me on the phone and I had hoped that we might have met and discussed, face to face, the cause that is dear to my heart. That all speaks volumes for your integrity and honesty – values that are in short supply in today’s political scene.

I hope that your spell on the back benches will be a short one. The country needs political leaders of your stature. I recall that arguably one of the greatest parliamentary leaders of the recent, if not all, times, Sir Winston Churchill, suffered periods when he was in the political wilderness. Then cometh the day, cometh the Man, and he emerged to lead the Nation to victory in our hour of utmost need.

Thank you for taking the trouble to listen to and to read our cause.

Jeez Gerry the above are exactly my own sentiments except now I vote UKIP, I am fed up with the sleaze that the three main parties are about. Don Touhig appears to have gone against the grain, a bit like an old Tory Teddy Taylor that shot from the hip.

I feel we all ought to say Its our medal, leave well alone to those that oppose us

I haven't heard who is to replace Mr Touhig - I guess that Veteran's affairs are not considered as important, unlike Prescott's affairs, which are. The Veteran's Agency web site still shows Don Touhig in office.

I like that comment. Perhaps we should translate it into Malay and use it ?

Closest I could come Gerry:

Pingat Kami - Jangan sentuh!
= Our Medal - Don't touch

'Don't touch' is a literal translation of 'Jangan sentuh!' ...but it might be construed to mean 'Leave well alone', or perhaps, 'Hands Off!'

Perhaps Barry will set me straight?
